The Benefits of Student Housing

Student Housing

Student living is a great way for young adults to gain independence while still enjoying the security of living close to school. In addition, it is an excellent opportunity to develop responsibility in a team environment. In university housing, students learn to collaborate with people from many different courses. For example, one student may take humanities while the other takes engineering, and working together on assignments is a valuable skill to have.

Unlike most private apartment rentals, college-owned student lettings in Loughborough is often fully furnished. This can be very helpful for a student who is renting for the first time, as it can save the cost of purchasing furniture or storing it in parents' homes. Additionally, many of these types of properties are located within walking distance to campus, which can reduce the need for a car and related expenses.

While many universities have traditional dormitories, a growing number of colleges now offer "off-campus" apartments that are rented to students, primarily through the school. These properties, while not traditional in design, are modeled after the typical college apartment with private bedrooms and bathrooms, common areas for studying or socializing and fully equipped kitchens. Many of these also have on-site laundry facilities. Typically, these are owned by the university and managed by resident assistants or other campus employees.

Many students living off-campus, in houses or apartments, will be looking at the price and proximity of the property to campus when deciding where to live. This can lead them to make decisions that might be financially sound but less convenient for their educational needs. Having the ability to walk to class and having access to campus resources, such as libraries and tutoring centers, is important for student success.

Student housing can also provide a sense of community for students that might not otherwise have the opportunity to be exposed to other cultures or lifestyles. In some cases, students can also be housed with students of the same sex, which is an option that can promote learning and friendships.

Students with disabilities who are interested in residential student accommodations should contact their disability services office early, as some accommodations require planning and/or advance notice to implement. Students who are eligible for accommodation due to a disability should understand that on-campus housing is not guaranteed, and even students with disabilities should check with their upper-level housing office for information about continued occupancy processes and procedures for juniors and seniors who wish to stay in housing. Some disabilities require specific accessibility features that are not available in most campus residences. To ensure that your accommodations are effective, your disability services staff will work with your instructors, the Housing & Residential Life staff, and other campus partners to identify appropriate solutions.
