Arteta: Martinelli has a bright future at Arsenal
Mikel Arteta insists Gabriel Martinelli has a “bright future” at Arsenal despite a lack of first-team opportunities this season.
The 19-year-old forward moved from Ituano to the Gunners in the summer of 2019 but had injury problems and has only played 13 games this season. His last start was against Manchester United in January.
He is the center of conversation among Arsenal fans and experts. Former Gunners defender Martin Keown is calling for Martinelli to get more playing time after losing 3-0 at home to Liverpool last week.
“I understand that,” said Chef Arteta when asked about those who ask him to show more.
“When the team doesn’t win enough football games, we always look for someone to do it. But we can name a few.
“I respect that and Gabi is doing really well. He’s getting better every day, he’s getting the right development.
“We have to be a little patient with him but he has a bright future at the club and he will have all the opportunities he needs to show us how good he is and what career he can have with us.”
Arsenal have made a transition from experience to youth since Arteta took office, with Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka already established on the team.
Sunday, April 18, 12:30 p.m.
Start at 1:30 p.m.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has also been on the bench for the past few weeks, but Arteta believes Martinelli’s time will come.
“Because we can’t put six or seven small children out there. We need some cohesion, we need the timing,” said Arteta.
“Gabi has a lot to improve. He also has great qualities and we have other players in those positions.
“Then we have to make connections within the team and balance within the team. This will come.”
