WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President-elect Joe Biden's candidate for Secretary of State Antony Blinken made his first visit to the State Department on Thursday and attended his first in-building meetings and briefings since the elections.
Blinken was not expected to meet in person with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is in quarantine after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus. It wasn't immediately clear whether the two would have a virtual meeting.
A spokesman for the transition team said Blinken and his team followed strict COVID-19 protocols during the visit, adding that the trusted Biden advisor will continue to be allowed to attend occasional face-to-face meetings at the department over the coming weeks.
The State Department announced Wednesday that Pompeo has been quarantined but did not answer any further questions about how or when Pompeo came into contact with the infected person or whether they showed symptoms.
After weeks of waiting, President Donald Trump's administration paved the way for Biden to transition to the White House in November, giving him access to briefings and funding, even as Trump promised to continue fighting the election results.
Blinken, a longtime confidante of Biden, was number 2 in the State Department and deputy national security advisor in President Barack Obama's administration.
