Carabao Cup 2020-21 on TV

Carabao Cup 2020-21 rules

As in the period 2019-20, Extra time will be canceled for all rounds with the exception of the final. If there is a tie at the end of regular time, there will be a tie.

This was introduced to limit "extra fatigue" issues as Carabao Cup matches are usually held midweek.

The trial of the ABBA penalty system has also been dropped, and the format for penalty shootouts has now been reset to the standard ABAB penalty order order.

The seed was also removed from the first two rounds.

Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR) will continue to be used in games on Premier League grounds.

In addition, this is the first instance in which the winner qualifies for the play-offs of the brand new Europa Conference League instead of the second qualifying round of the Europa League.

All ties are played as individual legs.

Will away goals count in the Carabao Cup semi-finals?

If both teams are tied in the return leg of one of the semi-finals after the end of full-time, the game goes straight to a penalty shootout with one No away goal rule implemented – a rule that started in 2018-19.

Previously, the away goals rule was applied in the same way in the semi-finals as in the knockout rounds of the Champions League. For example, if the away team had scored a goal in the first leg that ended in a 1-1 draw while the second leg ended 0-0, that team would have moved on to the final decision thanks to the away goals rule.

Now such a rule is no longer taken into account and the stalemate in the second leg is ultimately decided by a penalty shoot-out.

Why is the League Cup called the Carabao Cup?

Until 2016, after the Football League was rebranded into the English Football League, the tournament was called the English Football League Cup (EFL Cup) instead of the League Cup.

Officially, the EFL Cup is known as the Carabao Cup, as the energy drink are the official sponsors of the tournament.

Before Carabao's sponsorship of the tournament from 2017 onwards, the competition was called the EFL Cup (2016-17), Capital One Cup (2012-13 to 2015-16), and Carling Cup (sponsored by Molson Coors from 2003-04) to 2011-12) Worthington Cup (sponsored by Worthington & # 39; s from 1998-99 to 2002-03) and the Coca-Cola Cup (from 1992-93 to 1997-98).
