The game of cricket first began with the English team playing a match against the Dutch team at Christ Church Lawn in 18lake. The match was played at a time when cricketing nations were fighting for supremacy among themselves. The match, which was won by the English team, was the first-class cricketing event to take place in England. It also marked the beginning of what is known as the English cricketing tradition.

After the match, cricket was introduced as a part of the public school curriculum in England and gradually became an all-round sport. In the early years of the sport, cricket was not so popular among professionals or among the general public. However, with time the game has gained in popularity. As the cricketing nations got stronger and cricket became a part of their education system, the sport gradually grew in popularity.

The first cricket teams were made up of students who were sent from various colleges to the universities of Oxburgh, University of Cambridge and University of Yorkshire. In the first decade of the first century, there were hardly any professional cricket teams. However, as the century progressed cricket began to gain momentum as it was able to gain the support of the public. Cricket became a passion for many people and professional teams were formed to chase cricketing achievements. A few years later, when cricket reached its first century, cricket started getting more commercial value as cricket clubs started investing money in cricket gear and other items.

Cricket, being a popular sport, travelled to different parts of the world and even Asia. During this period cricket had experienced huge growth in all areas. There were professional teams like the Western and Australian Cricket teams that played regular matches throughout the world. This helped cricket gain global popularity and teams like the South African and New Zealand Cricket teams began playing regularly too.

Two other world games cricket played a major role in helping popularize cricket. First-class cricket became popular in cricket circles as teams started playing internationally. Cricket became a chance for people to travel abroad and take part in this thrilling sport. Cricket became a chance for cricket fans to see their favorite players and to enjoy the thrill of playing this sport. Many countries like England, Australia, West Indies, India, and New Zealand began playing annual fixtures that were played in one or more venues. This helped cricket gain fans all over the world and cricket teams were able to earn huge amounts of sponsorship.

Cricket became a part of the Olympic Games too. The first cricket competition took place in 1900 at the Sydney Festival. This helped cricket gain international status and cricket teams started participating in international tournaments. In the first half of the twentieth century cricket teams started playing regularly against other countries. With the help of the Twenty20 format cricket has gained immense popularity as a well played and entertaining sport.
