WASHINGTON (Reuters), Calif. Governor Gavin Newsom said Tuesday he would appoint Alex Padilla to the U.S. Senate to fill the remainder of the term of Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris.

Padilla, California's Secretary of State and son of Mexican immigrants, will be the first Latino to represent California in the Senate. Harris will take office as Vice President on January 20th.

Harris' tenure in the Senate has two years left, which means Democrat Padilla would have to win the election in November 2022 to stay in office for a full six-year term.

On Tuesday, documents for an election campaign committee of the Senate were submitted to the federal election commission.

Newsom noted that the incoming Senator's parents were cooks and house cleaners, and Padilla "worked her way from humble beginnings to the halls of MIT, Los Angeles City Council, and the Senate to become a national voting rights advocate."

Padilla in a statement pledged to fight for "those who are struggling to make ends meet with the small businesses struggling to keep their doors open to the health workers looking for relief".
