Lengthy-term overview of the OnePlus TV U-Sequence 55U1: Blurring the road between premium and reasonably priced

OnePlus TV U1 is like OnePlus TV Q1, but cheaper. OnePlus, of course, had to make some changes to bring the price down from Rs 69,900 to Rs 49,999, but the biggest change was to hear critical feedback and customer feedback. I cannot stress the importance of this enough. The Q1 had all the ingredients to justify its higher price tag, but it was also rough around the edges, which was OnePlus' first try. The U1 may not be as high quality, but it's a much more concerted feat from OnePlus. It's more sophisticated and is even better value for money. This makes it the best smart TV from the company on the market today.

This starts with the core design. Now the Q1 was a gorgeous TV, so I'm assuming OnePlus already had a solid foundation. The only thing it had to do was make it more practical. The U1 is a more practical television, but more on that later. What I really like about the U1 is that while OnePlus is technically a more affordable TV and covers an entirely different segment, it didn't compromise on the building materials or aesthetics. Competitors tend to do that. There are two large food stalls here. The Q1 is made of metal through and through and is razor-sharp – as if in the truest sense of the word.

OnePlus has always had a knack for minimalism and subtle elegance, if you will. A OnePlus product is just as beautiful from the front as it is from the back and sides – this is standard and has nothing to do with price or positioning. The Q1 has kept this legacy intact, as has the U1. It's not exactly identical to the U1, yet it is very familiar with its carbon fiber-like finish on the back and the exceptionally slim bezels on the front. At its thinnest point, the U1 measures just 6.9 mm. All in all, you can tell by this that it is a OnePlus TV. However, all of this metal means that the U1 is quite heavy. Good thing televisions aren't meant to be lugged around.

But televisions should definitely be robust. Despite all the bonuses, the Q1 was not a robust television. One of the reasons was OnePlus' fancy circular base that made the whole thing shake even with an intentional touch. The U1 uses more conventional stands that OnePlus delivers in the box – these are also made of metal and are just as eye-catching as the rest of the TV. OnePlus doesn't provide wall-mount accessories with the U1, but it's just a phone call away to send these things to you in case you need them. They are sold separately so this should be taken into account. It is always a good idea to use first-party wall mounting accessories for assembly and processing, as well as for proper assembly.

Like the rest of the TV, the U1's remote control is a dimmed version of the Q1's remote control. It looks the same, but it's bigger and made of plastic. I don't mind the use of plastic, but I think this is one area that OnePlus cut corners in. The whole thing feels weak. In keeping with the overall theme of this TV, the remote also gets a much-needed upgrade with a dedicated multi-function button that allows you to access quick settings from anywhere on the screen.

Apropos screen: The big highlight are the wafer-thin bezels. When they are off you won't even notice them and they are barely there even if they are on. OnePlus claims a whopping 95 percent screen-to-body ratio, which isn't far from what you get in the first quarter. At one end there is a small chin with the OnePlus logo and the power button to complete the package. This screen has some impressive credentials too. It's 55 inches, which I think is the ideal screen size for most households – not too small, not very large – and has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 or Ultra HD. The real kicker is the support for Dolby Vision and MEMC (Motion Estimation, Motion Compensation), functions that are rare in this price range.

The panel is an LED backlit LCD and not like the Q1 QLED, which is understandable given the lower price tag. For what it's worth, the quality of the screen here is excellent. Colors are punchy, brightness levels and viewing angles are pretty good for the price too. OnePlus gives you many profile options that allow you to customize the display to suit your taste and the content available. MEMC is an added value that I personally don't particularly like. The U1 is best at playing top 4K Dolby Vision content the way it is intended, but it's not too shabby when it comes to displaying lower resolution content (1080p and lower) either. The U1 can intelligently upscale this content in real time and does a pretty good job of it.

The software in the U1 is Android TV 9 Pie. You can choose between the basic layout and the custom OnePlus skin Oxygen Play, which focuses more on content than apps. However, it is still in its early stages, which means there is still a lot of room for improvement. Xiaomi's Patch Wall is a clear benchmark for how a third-party Android TV experience can be when it comes to smarts and ease of use.

The U1 beats its weight in all important areas and still in some areas. (Photo credit: Saurabh Singh / Financial Express)

The U1 has a 30W speaker setup (with Dolby Atmos support) that can get very loud, but the overall sound quality could be better.

Connectivity options include three HDMI ports (one of which supports ARC), two USB ports, AV-In and RF, an optical audio out, and an Ethernet port.

Should you buy the OnePlus TV U Series 55U1?

India's smart TV market is full of activity today. There are many good options to consider. And unlike in the past, you don't even have to break your bank to get a good smart TV. Or rather, a function that the T offers. The OnePlus TV U1 is one of those smart TVs that is blurring the line between premium and affordable. The good thing about the U1 is that it does this across the board. Whether you are talking about the design and building materials, specifications or experience, the U1 exceeds its weight in all major areas and a lot more.

The U1 isn't the most affordable smart TV on the market today. However, if you're looking for something that isn't just about the basics, but also gives you a shot of premium in a high quality package, this is what you should check out. That it also makes high-end features like Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos accessible is just the icing on the cake.

Benefits:

  • Premium build and design
  • Great 4K screen
  • Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos support

Disadvantage:

  • Audio could be better
  • Weak remote control
