Rory McIlroy reflects on a great day of putting, a terrible mistake, and what it’s like to fight fans at the Wells Fargo Championship again.
Rory McIlroy admitted that he enjoyed being competitive amid the “buzz” of spectators lining the fairways at Quail Hollow.
McIlroy was enjoying one of his best days on the greens when a three-under-68-year-old stopped him within two strokes of the lead in the Wells Fargo Championship finals.
The two-time champion made four birdies on the top nine on the third day alone to take the lead, though hoping to get a hat-trick with wins he hit when he got his drive in trouble on the 12th and ran up a double Bogey six.
McIlroy is a two-time champion at Quail Hollow
McIlroy did well at par with a confident 8-foot putt on the nearest green and passed a great test of determination on building a safe parry down the course to stay under at seven.
“It was a lively atmosphere,” said McIlroy, who played the weekend for the first time since the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March. “There was definitely a buzz, especially that I made it to the top nine. It was just so cool to play in such an atmosphere again.
“I missed it. I didn’t think I would miss it as much as I did, but I really do. To be in competition, to have the fans back, I really enjoyed it today and I am. ” excited about tomorrow.

McIlroy also revealed he had to hold back after hitting the form on one of his favorite tracks. This form came as a bit of a surprise as he is in a transition phase with his swing under the watchful eye of Pete Cowen and longtime coach Michael Bannon.
“I’m very excited to be in the position I am in, but I didn’t really expect to be in that position this week,” he added. “I felt like I was still working on my game and I thought that this week’s progression here today is what I am.
McIlroy enjoys arguing back with the fans
“Then I played well again today so I just have to go out and try to play well again tomorrow and see where that leaves me.”
“I’m nervous, but I like it nervous because it means that it is important. It means that it is really important. It is about not being too overwhelmed and trying to outdo yourself.
