Ole: We want to end the season at a high point

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to end the season at a high point after Manchester United prepared a Europa League semi-final against Roma.

Marcus Rashford’s goal and a late penalty from Bruno Fernandes in Granada last week put the Red Devils in control of their quarter-finals against the European debutants.

United won again 2-0 on Thursday when Edinson Cavani’s early volley and a late own goal by Jesus Vallejo sealed a 4-0 aggregate win and the club’s 18th semifinals.

Roma are between Solskjaer’s side and the Gdańsk final – a tie that brings back memories of United’s remarkable 8-3 aggregate victory over the Italian team in the 2007 Champions League quarter-finals.

Solskjaer was involved on both legs and the current Roam team includes Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Chris Smalling – starters when United won the Europa League in 2017.

“We lost the away game but the strange thing was the manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] was so happy after that defeat – I’ve never seen him so happy after losing a game, “said the United boss after supporting the 2-1 away defeat before taking the 7-1 triumph in Old Trafford won.

“He was so confident that we will win the home game in such a surreal way. We have to make the most of it. We have the chance to get to the final. Well done today. Disciplined work, professional and not really under too much pressure.”

Solskjaer is hoping to be lucky for the fifth time after United fell short in four semifinals last season.

“Let’s hope so,” said the Norwegian, who is looking for his first responsible trophy. You know, when you get to a semi-finals that’s the nature of the game – you play against good teams.

“We played against some good teams, but we’re excited about the chance to get to the final again. I saw the determination and attitude of every player that we want to go one step further.”

“The disappointment with the defeats we had gives us the motivation to go one step further and hopefully end the season at a high point.”

Paul Pogba was in the absence of the suspended Harry Maguire with a skipper by his side and offered Cavanis prelude a clever support.

However, the midfielder was replaced at the end of a first half when Granada asked him to get a second booking.

“I didn’t want to risk a scenario where it was tackled and a little late,” said Solskjaer.

“I thought he went in fair, won a couple, got a couple of fouls on him, which I didn’t think were fouls. So there was no point risking him and Donny (Van De Beek) needed a game and he did is good.” But Paul is a leader on and off the pitch. I have a few of these. “
