WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Republican Senator David Perdue appeared to mock Kamala Harris at a rally for President Donald Trump in the battlefield state of Georgia on Friday, during which he repeatedly mispronounced the vice-presidential candidate's name.

Harris, a US Senator from California, is the daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica. Former Vice President Joe Biden named Harris a fellow campaigner in August. This made her the first black woman and the first Asian-American woman to join a major party presidential ticket.

She said her name should be pronounced "comma-la".

Perdue, who is in a highly competitive Senate re-election battle against Democrat Jon Ossoff, spoke to Trump in the city of Macon, central Georgia, on Friday night.

The video of his speech shows Perdue making repeated exaggerated attempts to pronounce the name before saying, "I don't know whatever." The crowd replies with laughter.

Ossoff tweeted that Perdue did not mock a senator who was male or white.

John Burke, a spokesman for Perdue's campaign, tweeted that the Senator "just mispronounced Senator Harris's name and meant nothing".

Republican incumbent Trump follows Biden in national opinion polls, but state polls show a tight race in Georgia, a state that has become increasingly diverse and democratic.
