Saunders suffered a “broken eye socket”.
Billy Joe Saunders suffered a “broken eye socket,” said promoter Eddie Hearn during his loss to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in the battle for the unification of the world titles.
The British fighter was taken away in an ambulance after the super middleweight showdown was abandoned prior to round nine when Canelo merged the WBC, WBA and WBO belts at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Matchroom boss Hearn confirmed that Saunders was prevented from continuing on his corner after a serious injury.
“He couldn’t see,” Hearn said to DAZN. “I spoke to [trainer] Mark Tibbs. He couldn’t see and he wouldn’t let him go.
“I thought Billy boxed beautifully. Canelo is so strong that he took his time. Billy is so tricky, but he broke his eye socket. Canelo became strong at the end of the fight. Too good.
“It was a great performance by Billy Joe Saunders, he came to win.”
Canelo stated his intentions to become Mexico’s first undisputed world champion at 168 pounds and Hearn plans to deliver a bout against IBF champion Caleb Plant.
“Ultimately, Canelo Alvarez will fight absolutely everyone,” said Hearn.
“You know who he wants to fight. He told me who he wants to fight, Caleb Plant. It’s over with Caleb Plant.
“I’ll talk to your team. Wherever that has to take place, this is the fight that has to take place for boxing.
“The undisputed championship of 168 pounds and it’s the must-have to fight next.
“What is Caleb Plant going to do?”
Hearn also hinted that he is about to announce Anthony Joshua’s undisputed heavyweight title bout against Tyson Fury.
He said, “Him [Canelo] and AJ are the sport’s two biggest stars and we have good news for you next week too. “
