Warzone in Name of Obligation: Black Ops Chilly Conflict, defined: Timeline, crossplay & extra
Amid this week’s release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, questions have swirled about how the Warzone mode from Modern Warfare will carry over into the new game.
Activision will let people to participate in Warzone from within Modern Warfare while still giving Black Ops Cold War users access. That’s a difficult task — different weapons and play styles in Black Ops Cold War seem difficult to neatly combine with how things have worked previously.
As a result, the publisher bought extra time by delaying the release of Warzone on the latest installment of COD until at least December. When it drops Season 1 of Black Ops Cold War, it is expected to also unveil the new cross-game Warzone.
There’s already confirmed information about how this will go down, though some of the specifics remain vague.

Here’s an explanation of what is known about how Warzone will evolve when it comes to Black Ops Cold War:
When will Warzone come out for Black Ops Cold War?
Activision has not confirmed a date, but it is expected that Warzone will be released for the new Call of Duty game in December. It will likely accompany the Season 1 package for Black Ops Cold War.
Will there be separate Warzone modes for Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War?
Nope, the plan is to integrate Black Ops Cold War’s Warzone with the one already in Modern Warfare. In other words, players on both games will be able to face off with one another.
How will Warzone work if there are different weapons and game builds?
Here is the confusing part of Activision’s plans. As anyone who has played Modern Warfare and Black Ops titles knows, the games feel extremely different. From time-to-kill to perks to map color schemes, developers Infinity Ward and Treyarch have repeatedly shown they hold contrasting priorities.
Right now, the general idea is to have all weapons currently in Warzone for Modern Warfare remain available in the game mode while adding Black Ops weapons at the start of Season 1. The Modern Warfare engine for Warzone will reportedly be retained. But how things will be balanced might be a challenge that takes time for Activision to figure out.
“There are no current plans to remove content from Warzone,” wrote Activision, “but to ensure the best possible player experience, there may be occasions where content is delayed, or becomes temporarily or permanently inaccessible.”
Will Warzone player progression reset for Black Ops Cold War?
When Season 1 for Black Ops Cold War comes out, numeric rankings in all games will be reset but weapon, perk and killstreak unlocks in Modern Warfare will remain untouched.
Will Warzone still be in Verdansk?
Verdansk will remain the lone Warzone map for the forseeable future. Designers have tweaked the environment for different events and will probably continue to do so once Black Ops Cold War is incorporated.
In a website release, Activision hinted at an eventual separate Warzone map from Verdansk, though that might not come until 2021. Emphasis is ours:
“Like every off-the-books clandestine operation, expect to uncover more secrets, and experience memorable moments as the Cold War heats up across Verdansk (and beyond) in the months and seasons ahead.”
