The World Health Organization holds a briefing on the coronavirus pandemic on Monday after 40 million cases were reported worldwide.

The grim milestone is that different parts of Europe and the US are struggling to cope with an alarming surge in infections. On Friday, the WHO said the coronavirus outbreak in Europe was "worrying" as the number of ICU beds available in some regions continues to decline and are near full.

"We know a number of cities across Europe where intensive care capacity will be reached in the coming weeks," said Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical director. "This is worrying as we approach flu season."
