Willingly activate Dettori
Frankie Dettori is already recognized as one of the greats in horse racing – and on Sunday he will help Enable achieve similar status with an unprecedented third win at the Prix de l & # 39; Arc de Triomphe in Qatar.
After the John Gosden-trained mare led to a record-breaking third victory in Group 1 within three quarters of a year, the ever-popular Italian will make up for what is likely to be her swan song in Paris Longchamp.
Although Nathaniel's daughter has a résumé far superior to any other horse Dettori has ridden during his career, he believes that just a win in the mile and a half over the weekend will cement her place among the best in the annals of the Adorned lawn.
He said, "She is by far the best horse in terms of resumes I've ridden. When you think of Fantastic Light and Daylami, I've only won five Group 1 races and she has won 11. She has almost doubled group one of all the other horses I've ridden.
"For me, if I can win the third bow, it's all for her. I will work hard to make this happen for her as I want her to be remembered as one of the greats. She can only be called that when she wins a third bow.
"She got so close last year and we're going to roll again now."
Riding a horse superstar like Enable comes with added pressure, but despite the possible reward, the 49-year-old is more comfortable in the situation he is in than he was last year.
Dettori said: "I'm actually not as nervous as last year when we drove three times in a row. Now that she was beaten in the race last year, that takes some pressure off.
"We know exactly how hard it is to win. We have no illusions – it will be difficult.
"It took a while to get over it last year when we got so close and I was 100 meters ahead of me. You always analyze what you could have done better, like any athlete, but that's gone now and we have to think ahead.
"There will only be 1,000 people there this year, so you don't get the same vibe, but we'll still try to make history, but I feel calmer than last year."
Enable has shown no sign of her form deteriorating this season after returning from the Eclipse defeat at Sandown on her return and becoming the first three-time winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes stakes in July at Ascot .
Dettori warmed up with victory in the same Kempton Group Three she took on the road to her 2018 Arc success. She thinks Enable is in the right place before her fateful date.
He added: "It took her a lot longer to get her where we wanted to over the summer. She stayed in training for one reason and only one reason, and that's for a third win in the Arc.
“It was just about working backwards from the Arc. She picked up a third King George on the way which was great as that was another record. I think John has Enable in the best possible condition he can. I think we have them where we want them. "
The three-time jockey champion evaluates those who want to take their chance against Enable in the French capital and expects the greatest challenge to come from her stablemate and three-time Ascot Gold Cup hero Stradivarius.
He said: "There are a lot of rain forecasts right now and it depends on how much we get. Sure it will be soft and it could be extremely extremely soft. That would add persistence to the equation and Stradivarius could come along." the picture.
"He showed up on soft ground in the Ascot Gold Cup and he is doing very well at the moment so he would be a major threat that we must respect
"Enable is in a good mood though. She's aggressive at home, which is always a good sign for her. She seems in a good place."
Given the affection Dettori has for Enable, it seems hard to believe that he overlooked her on her first start at three o'clock at a race in Newbury in favor of then stablemate Shutter Speed. But he explains at the time that it was an easy decision.
He said, "Shutter Speed was a good workhorse. It turned out that Enable is another horse on the track and the rest is really history. It was an easy decision at the time how the two horses worked.
“It's amazing how different the morning work and the afternoon performance can be. It's not just enabling who is like that. The Palace Pier is the same and you wouldn't know it's in the yard in the morning. Some horses need different environments to make them tick, and Enable does. "
Regardless of which result Enable achieves in the Arc, an outpouring of emotions is guaranteed by Dettori – but for the moment he is concentrating on the task ahead and not on what awaits him in the following.
He said, "It's going to be emotional on Sunday. Right now I'm strong. I've been in the same position there before, but right now it's about focusing on taking the lead and dealing with it and getting it done." . " Sure everything goes smoothly before I get my leg on board for the race. All of my emotions will spread afterwards.
"There will be excitement that day, but I want to try to enjoy the moment and let the story unfold."
